DREAM A BETTER WORLD FEST’s main goals and focus:
The overall mission statement of the fest is to create an interdisciplinary space that could help the immediate Somerville community as well as the wider Boston community through live music and art and by sharing one good idea, perspective, or connection that could help other people move out of fear, despair, or feeling frozen during these times and move towards action and inspiration. We invite participants to consider the question “How can we free ourselves and each other from oppression and create a world worth living in?”
The whole focus of the event is around sharing actionable ideas to create a better future, sharing personal experiences and perspectives, and helping people move out of frozen/stuck/despair places into inspiration and action places.
Musicians, artists, poets, community organizations, and activists were invited to speak (or share a poem or presentation) at the event between musical sets from incredible local musicians Evan Greer, Ruby Grove, Why Try, Linnea’s Garden, Chris Walton, Songs of Liberation, and Lonely Leesa and the Lost Cowboys.
Speakers were invited to pick something they’re distinctly passionate about, and focus on either expressing what they’ve been seeing recently in that area from their individual lens that might wake people up or help them relate, or focus on one (or a few) good actionable ideas they’d like to share with the interdisciplinary audience that might inspire someone to take action, to do something better for the world, join a community, invent new solutions, or to collaborate with others.
Dream A Better World Fest is centered around the idea that we need to respond to the current times not just as a knee jerk reaction to Trump but by actually brainstorming and sharing ideas and visualizing how we could create a better world (ie supporting immigrants through their transition to the US, adopting sustainable practices, creating legislation and fighting for non-lethal representation in government that believes in climate change and is fighting for a green future, protecting LGBTQ+, POC, and minority communities, combating isolationist-motivated ignorance through exposure to diverse communities, increasing mental wellness, increasing individual sense of purpose, taxing the rich and decreasing poverty, revamping our healthcare system, creating sick days for musicians or gig workers, overcoming authoritarianism patterns and indoctrination, addressing gentrification and how it affects lower-income/creative communities, creating community, etc, I could go on). To give an example, we have seen people like Zohran Mamdani in NYC run successful, hopeful, action-oriented campaigns addressing a wide variety of real problems people are facing from all backgrounds and think this energy is similar to the spirit of our festival.
We hope to see you there August 24th for this one of a kind event in Somerville!
